Earlier this month, The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Singapore as the most expensive city in the world for expatriates to live in. Interestingly, The Sunday Times ran the following story: “US couple learn to find ways to adjust to life here “, on Sunday March 28. The piece detailed how corporate pilot Cyril Letzelter, his wife, and two daughters tough it out in Singapore on a combined modest monthly salary of S$29,000. His wife works as an engineer here. The Letzelter family currently rents a 150 sq m place in Thomson at S$4,400 a month. “For that amount, we can get two cars and a very big house in the US,” said Letzelter. According to ST, the Letzelter’s average monthly expenses are as follows: Rent: $4,400 Groceries: $2,400 Public transport and taxis: $800 Dining out: $500 Education: $1,000 Helper: $1,000 Utilities: $350 Entertainment: $200 Total: $10,650 (SGD) Mrs...
