There are few invertebrate hunters as potent and purposeful as octopuses. Careful waders can sometimes catch the cephalopods in action on intertidal reef flats, where small individuals glide over the rubble, touching and feeling, pausing every foot or so to insert a brace of tentacles into handy holes and withdrawing, should the probe draw a blank, in a fluid sequence that betrays neither haste nor hesitation. Others hover above a promising crevice before plunging in, beak first, with all eight arms stretched into a web, the better to bar the flight of leggy prey. Turning the tables, as it were, on a phylum often at odds with the molluscan hordes, octopuses are partial to decapod crustaceans, whose claws ther suckers are able to neutralise and whose chitinous hides they penetrate with venomous bites.
