Sally lightfoot crab s are not as commonly seen as one might suppose, given their penchant for coasts where the waves crash onto the rocks and burst into flames of fine bubbles with every blow at the hard edge of the earth. Thus, it was a cause for minor celebration when we spied a few about two weeks ago on the breakwater below the pier at St John's Island, which also harboured several metopograpsids, a spotted-bellied forceps crab and a spiky sea cucumber that clung to the wall just above the splash zone. Once spotted, Grapsus is quite easily identified, being markedly larger and lankier than most purple climber crabs, with a rounder profile and proportionately daintier claws.
