National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) has released a paper to outline to help Singaporeans understand the options and trade-offs the country has to make in the face of demographic challenges – declining birth rates, a shrinking workforce and an ageing population, for instance. You should read the paper to fully understand what the govt view of the issue. But if you don't have time, here is a video released by the NPTD to explain the issue: It is not too complicated. The fertility rate of Singapore is very low. Our population is starting to grow old, grey and shrink unless we accept some level of immigration. With an ageing or shrinking population, our economy will shrink - there will be fewer opportunities for all.
