There must be a few pools in the vicinity, for some dragonflies were still active at Tanah Merah near the end of a greylagged day. Waterlogged portions of the rampant scrubland between the road and the shore probably serve as nurseries for odonates with fast-growing nymphs and a tolerance for stagnant pools. A few wandering gliders floated over the reeds and thorny shrubs; one descended to rest on a stalk in the fashion of its tribe , with its abdomen dangling, as if the wirey legs lacked the strength to raise the body to the obelisk of smaller libellulids. These broad-winged hunters have boomed in recent weeks and now swarm over the city's fields as heralds of the monsoon who ride its winds and soar through thunder and rain.
