They are easy to miss, being just half a centimetre in diameter at the most, but dubious nerites occur in rare abundance on sand flats and the level portions of sea walls that receive the protection of mangroves and rock bunds. On the strip of unconsolidated sediments that has formed behind the embankment of Tanah Merah near the ferry terminal to Batam and beyond, these pea-sized snails glide over seagrasses and stones, grazing microalgae in untold numbers but remaining just a little less visible than the batillarids that throng the shore in crunching densities. Many of these minute nerites offer scant contrast against the grains, being clad in similar shades of brown or beige. But others bear zigzags, chevrons, dashes, notches and waves in combinations and colours that defy standardisation and invite conjecture.
