As bus drivers strike, government messaging goes into overdrive #busstrike

I have three points to make about the industrial action undertaken by bus drivers of SMRT Corp earlier this week. 171 of them, all recruited from China, failed to show up for work last Monday; 88 were absent the following day (Source: Straits Times, 1 Dec 2012, SMRT has deep-seated issues: CEO). My 3 points are: 1. There should be equal pay for equal work; 2. The government is shooting itself in its own foot by abandoning principle #1 above; 3. The government pretends there is a process for labour justice, but there isn’t and its absence sows the seed for future instability. The drivers’ chief grouse was that they were paid less than Singaporean and Malaysian drivers. Foregin Labour going on strike. Will there be more? Most of our"tough" job are filled by foreginer such as our bldg&const., Food & bevg., Sweeper, gardener, etc. They contribute to our prosper and success. We might have good architect but it will not be complete without const. workers & they are usually foreginer. Food&bevg. seen increase in foreginer too due to long working hours, Sweeper &gardener majority are Foreginer. With high living cost these tough jobs salary are not enough for local to support &High overhead cost, Employer cannot afford to give high pay. In the end foreginer best solution.Maybe govt can give rebates or rewarding system for local, encouraging them to take up jobs which contribute to our nation. Eg: Const. worker we need them of our bldgs &roads ,sweeper&gardener they contribute to our "clean&green city".Local drivers for our public transport. By increasing foreginer worker levy will not slove the problem of getting local to fill up the "tough"jobs.
