Last month, I wrote a brief commentary on an article I read online, about Singapore’s obsession with tuition. I have always known that Singapore is a tuition nation, but I never knew just how bad the situation was. Let’s look at some stats I just found online, from a study conducted by Blackbox. 80% think that tuition helps! I'm not sure if we should feel happy that as a nation we are an optimistic bunch, or that we are so deluded that we are not looking at the big picture. Only 9% of Singaporeans say 'No' to tuition, and will not send their kids for tuition. That's pretty sad. Our student population will be made up of 91% sad, over-stressed students. I can understand the sum for parents of kids in secondary school or junior college, but if you're spending $500 per month on tuition for your primary school or pre-school kid, I think you need to re-think your parenting skill...
