Far from being mild-mannered browsers, katydids chew on pretty much whatever comes their way, from tender blades and blooms to other insects, snails and even small vertebrates. Members of the tribe Phlugidini in the subfamily Meconematinae, which have three local representatives , are established insectivores. These gracile, bug-eyed katydids dwell on shrubs and saplings in well-shaded forests, where they scour low foliage for prey and call at frequencies beyond the range of human ears. One species, the missing marvelous katydid (Asiophlugis thaumasia ), enjoys the dubious honour of a listing in the Red Data Book, and what little is known about the genus suggests that they thrive only in little-disturbed habitats and would probably not survive attempts to turn growing woodlands into thematic destinations .
