As a child I remember reading the adventures of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew which were widely available in the library. They were written by written by Franklin W. Dixon and Carolyn Keene – names that I would later find out were pseuodonyms! Brian Mitchell blogs about the children’s books he read in the 1960s – those by Arthur Catherall. What’s so special about his books? Arthur Catherall wrote many childrens’ books, but his bulldog series, after a tugboat of the same name is most notable because it was set in Singapore! There were a total of 11 novels written, published between 1954 and 1968. According to Brian, this series of book, with 17-year-old Jack Frodsham as the author were also unusual in that they did not display the colonial attitude typical of the British Empire and portrayed Malayan and Chinese divers in a good light.
