The land on which the modern city stands was occupied as far back as the second century AD, and has been ruled by a long series of different political bodies since that time. In 1819 Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles signed a treaty with the Sultan of Johor and established Singapore as a British trading colony. It remained a British possession until 1963 when it became a part of Malaysia; two years later it was expelled from the Malaysia Federation and became the Republic of Singapore. In the 1960s the government began a campaign of modernization and reform that would ultimately lead the young city-state to its future place as a giant of commerce and industry. Public education focused on practical training in order to build an effective workforce, the Housing Development Board set up living spaces that would ultimately house the majority of the population, and the manufacturing ...
