By a quirk of political geography, many butterflies in the family Nymphalidae were bestowed English names that recall noble titles and military castes of colonial grandeur. Dragonflies have largely been spared the ignominy of jaded associations, but one quartet of libellulids has acquired noms de guerre befitting hunters clad in the striking colours of elite regiments charged with the task of lobbing explosive projectiles into enemy ranks. Medium-sized odonates with pretty colours and predictable habits, grenadiers betray a curious loyalty to their territories and particular attachment to outposts that offer an unimpaired view of their domains.
