20 years ago, the Singaporean Government published a book called "The Next Lap". The book is a bit of the usual SG Propaganda, but it strikes a tone that is both sober and optimistic. The PAP of that era was hopeful for the future, but realistic about the challenges that lay ahead. 20 years later, my impression is that Singaporeans - and their leaders - are tired. Instead of gearing up for the next lap, as the book's authors had hoped they would, they seem to have hit the wall, and are wheezing at the roadside of history. The rest of the world has cottoned on to the 'secrets' of East Asian economic success.
