Penny Loafers: Are these covered, slip-on shoes the most classic of them all?

Before Tod’s came about, luxury brand, Gucci, created an elegant pair of slip-on shoes for men with its classic, iconic metal strap across the upper of the shoe in the shape of a horse’s snaffle bit. Gucci’s loafers were soon a widespread epidemic, and was often considered part of uniform for a Wall Street banker. Fast forward to the emergence of Diego Della Valle’s luxury Italian label, Tod’s. Initially setting out to create the perfect driving shoe, the first Tod’s product was a handmade casual loafer going by Della Valle’s motto, that shoes should be like a pair of gloves. “Light, soft, comfortable, useful – something you can wear all day”. Tod’s is now synonymous with the loafer, and Della Valle is now the biggest investor in Saks Fifth Avenue, and owns shares in other companies such as Ferrari, Piaggio, and considers Bernard Arnault (owner of LVMH) a friend.
