Know Your Trend: From schoolgirls to rockstars & punk rebels to traditionalists, plaid is a pattern of contradictions

What do school girls, Scotland and Kurt Cobain have in common? Two things, if you can believe it: a streak of rebellion running in their veins, cloaked coincidentally in the joint uniform of plaid. Fashion’s eternally trendy checked pattern has a history that goes far deeper than its simple association with picnic mats. So definitive it was as a national emblem that when the British ruled the country after a hard fought battle, plaid was actually banned and outlawed for 36 years.
