Every year, in the weeks leading up to Aug 9, my mother would reach into the nether regions of the storeroom in our Bukit Purmei 4-room flat, and dust off what looked like a carefully-wrapped, red-and-white T-shirt. The stars and crescent would be ironed, then tied up to the window grilles, always with a double knot. My brother and I would run to view it from the common corridor, to make sure the flag, our family’s flag, was hung perfectly straight. The money plant always died when the national flag went up, but it was OK. Every August, something stirred in me, as I watched flags go up around the neighbourhood. Over the years, as our flag turned pink and beige, we would reluctantly retire it into a trash bag and down the rub...
