The attitude of the government official in the cartoon above is exactly the attitude adopted by the Ministry of Manpower whenever workers bring complaints to them. I don’t only refer to foreign workers; I’ve heard similar frustrations from Singapore employees when they claim to have been shortchanged — albeit these examples were from several years ago. Officials from the ministry approach all such cases as disputes between equals when the reality is that one side has more power than the other. They also tend to apply moral equivalence to both sides even when it is very obvious that one side is in the wrong.
