Right now, I seem to fall within this pit trap.
For many donkey eons, I kept thinking that accountancy will eventually lead to a job (& future career) with the big 4s, in either audit, tax or whatsoever.
But 3 weeks of work in 1 of it seems to prove things on the contrary.
Guess I was pretty much wrong.
What u studied sometimes has absolutely nothing to do with your job.
I realise that 1st while hating economics during my JC days…(but forgot abt it cleanly thanks to NS.)
But to think of what exactly I’m interested in?
It’s pretty much a headache.
To quote my career counsellor, “Anyone can decide what they want to be. A CEO, director, VP, etc. But how many positions are there anyway?”
And the meanest words? “Can’t find a job? MacDonald’s always hiring.”
Ain’t exactly the most pleasant words but yet there’s lots of truth to that.
End of the day, I believe while we shouldn’t be too picky & expect too much out of the employer (eg. company car, fantastic pantry, 9-6, etc), we should still give ourselves a decent & reasonable valuation.
[So to all SMU students out there, no offence but not every Tom, Dick or Harry can get that 4k-10k job. & of cos, that 3k avg is just, well an avg. Big 4’s starting is at 2.4-2.6k, so don’t complain.]
For now, let’s just reorganise our priorities, focus & gather our thoughts, & reposition myself to target a different sector.
Byebye big 4 & 2.4k range pay, hello to a 3k range pay. =P
