SINGAPORE will soon allow documentary and biographical party political films that are objective and do not distort facts, and an independent citizen panel will be set up to pass them. The Government on Friday morning announced its cautious acceptance of two-thirds of the recommendations made by a council it appointed to study the impact of new media.

It agreed to commit resources to engage the growing community of netizens, but said that for now, such exchanges would take place on the portal set up by Reach, the Government’s feedback unit.

On political content, the Advisory Council on the Impact of New Media on Society (Aims) had recommended that the current wide-ranging ban on party political films be liberalised in stages.

Minister for Information Communication and the Arts Lee Boon Yang agreed. As a first step, films that ar[...]

Dear Mr Postman (9th Jan 09)

Sports

Heh, I’m thankful once again for TNP Postman for posting my submission once again, despite not completely answering the question posed this week.

Here’s my full submission for the article:

THE POSTMAN’S QUESTION OF THE WEEK: WILL Manchester United condemn Chelsea convincingly in their Premiership showdown this Sunday, or will the Blues finally show the resilience they used to be famous for?

Give us your preview, including key player match-ups and sum up the importance of this clash on both sides’ title challenges, plus a score-line prediction.

Avoid telling us the die-hard fan story of how Manchester United will win because they are better. Tell us why they are better, be it tactically or personnel-wise.

Impressive statistics from both teams: Man U is undefeated at Old Trafford, while Chelsea is undefeated away in the Premier League. But take a closer look at their [...]

one step forward, another step back?

social issues

SINGAPORE : The Singapore government has accepted 17 out of 26 recommendations made by the Advisory Council on the Impact of New Media Society, or AIMS.

The government has acted. but I am still very discouraged by the aims of AIMS: To make recommendations to the Government on how these issues should be managed while keeping pace with the development of Interactive Digital Media (IDM) in Singapore.

I am uncomfortable with the usage of the word “manage”. By the choice of that word, it means that the government feels that the new media can be controlled and manipulated/melded, which itself has a negative connotation. That itself will seem to mean(to me) that the government has started off on the wrong footing, and that they do not seem to understand that new media shouldn’t be “managed”. Instead it should be cultivated and encouraged, given that the new media is heavily r[...]

One more execution carried out. Murder is never justified.

One-eye Dragon hanged

Fri, Jan 09, 2009

The Straits Times

GUNMAN Tan Chor Jin, 42, better known as the 'One-eyed Dragon', was hanged at Changi prison on Friday morning after he failed in his final bid for presidential clemency.

He was convicted in May 2007 of fatally shooting nightclub boss Lim Hock Soon 40, at the latter's Serangoon flat on Feb 15, 2006.

Tan, who is blind in one eye, applied for clemency in August last year, and was turned down last week, just before New Year's Day.

Films Act to be amended to allow factual party political films

Posted: 09 January 2009

SINGAPORE : The Singapore government has accepted 17 out of 26 recommendations made by the Advisory Council on the Impact of New Media Society, or AIMS.

It agreed with the Council that it should take a phased approach to liberalising the Films Act, instead of repealing it immediately.

It will amend the Films Act to allow for certain types of party political films, which means that political parties and their candidates will be able to use films for internet election advertising during an election.

But party political films will have to be factual and objective and not dramatise or present a distorted picture.

In a news conference this morning, Information, Communications and the Arts Minister Lee Boon Yang said that the government will move to amend the Films Act in the next next month or two.

The government also agreed to set up an independent a[...]

Day at the vet’s

Living
image

I spent the morning at the vet’s with Mac Our Dog, and it was a particularly busy morning there, with the receptionist at sixes and sevens, and though she was trying her humanly (and doggedly and cattedly) best to cope, Mac and I had to wait about an hour before we saw the vet, and when we did, the consultation rooms were all full so the vet actually came out to the reception area to see Mac.

Which was good of course, because Mac Our Dog has an understandable fear of the consultation rooms - he’s pretty happy in the reception area because he thinks it’s a wonderful place full of other people and animals. But once he’s in a consultation room, memories of needles and other cold and painful instruments assault his senses and he’s so stressed out you want to look for doggie cigarettes for him to calm his nerves.

The good thing with the wait was that Mac Our Dog got to [...]

Singaporeans work as long as you can!

MM Lee advises Singaporeans to work as long as you can : [Link]. Yes, work for as long as you can breathe. Why?....Many Singaporeans won't be able to retire at all. After all the tweaking of the CPF scheme for its use in HDB, Singaporeans are now at the bottom of a ranking of retirement income from pensions.

Pension & retirement income

S'poreans ranked lowest

SINGAPOREANS are at the bottom of a ranking of retirement income from pensions in the Asia-Pacific region, says the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

And this is true at all income levels, according to the study, which covered 19 locations including Hong Kong, Taipei and Japan, The Business Times reported on Friday.

The Pensions at a Glance study, which also involved the World Bank, found that Singapore's average gross replacement rate - the value of the pension as a perc[...]
