Hook up or split up, Pakatan needs to stop fooling around

Malaysia

From The Malaysian Insider

Time’s up, Pakatan Rakyat. The days of courting are over. You either decide to get married or go your separate ways. Malaysians have grown weary of the soap opera which is being played out every week (or is it every other day) by different members of the opposition alliance.

Headlines such as “DAP pulls out of Kedah state government”, “Unity talks irk PAS partners” were once greeted with a shrug of the shoulders and accepted as necessary growing pains of a nascent political coalition trying to find its footing post-Election 2008.

This charitable position was anchored on the belief that in time, Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP) would check their egos at the door and cobble together a common platform for a better Malaysia.

Malaysians also wanted to know if the three political par[...]

Whole SAF lost by PTE Tan Ah Kow

cow head not right horse mouth

PTE Tan Ah Kow, 19, only realized the enormity of his carelessness after he got out of the MRT station. He had left his backpack onboard the train. “What I am going to do?” sobbed the distraught Full-time National Serviceman (NSF). “I read that Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean had said during his Straits Times interview for SAF Day that the 3G SAF soldier has “‘actually got the whole SAF in his backpack.’ Siao liao, lose one bullet already seven years DB (Detention Barracks), like that even my grandchildren will be running with sandbags in Kranji!”

PTE Tan had really fallen asleep on the train while busily pretending to fall asleep after a pregnant lady with a toddler in tow boarded the train and seemed to be heading towards his ‘Reserved for Elderly, Disabled or Pregnant’ Seat. He woke up just as the train arrived at his destination sta[...]

Gathering at Speaker's Corner in August (3)

25 people have replied to the survey mentioned in this blog. Each person indicated that they will ask a small number of people to attend. Only 1 person is willing to speak.

I need more speakers. If you wish to share your story (with particulars removed to protect your confidentiality), I can get someone to speak on your behalf.

If you like the gathering to be organised, please give your reply here. You can also indicate if you wish to share your story for someone to speak on your behalf.

TV COE

Daily Musings

By George Tan, Guest Columnist

I received a TV Licence Payment Advice from MDA requiring me to cough up S$110 to pay for the annual fees a few days ago. Like any ordinary Singapore citizen, without wanting to argue why it is totally unnecessary for such fees to exist, I surrendered without a fight and went to look for a AXN machine near my house. As I dragged myself to pay, I read the payment advice more closely. The more I read, the more I think and the more I am upset.

First two highlights were that it is an offence to have a TV set at my premises without a valid TV licence. And authorised licensing officers would be conducting inspection for the presence of any TV set.
Next were the late payment fees were $25 and penalties after late payment stage is $200 and above. At the back of the letter is a comic strip with the highlight of why the need for TV licence.

Invest in Singapore Government Securities

Hi Mr Tan,

What is your view on the SGS (Singapore Government Securities)? Is it worth buying the bond for retail investors like me?

YS

REPLY

The interest rate paid on SGS is quite low, less than 1% per year, but it is safe.

If you can get a higher interest rate from bank deposits (which is guaranteed by the Government), it is better to put on bank deposit. The foreign banks offer higher interest rate and are still guaranteed by the Singapore Government.

If you wish to have a higher return, it is better to invest in a ETF (exchange traded fund). The return may be volatile in the short term, but it should give an attractive return over 10 years or longer.

Not too long ago

I wonder how many of you remember the school days when a bus from the Institute of Health would arrive at the school weekly to fetch students for dental treatment. All the scalings, extractions, fillings and dentures were provided free to the students. And after each treatment, the bus would send the children back to schools, all the time accompanied by a nurse. It must be a very costly operation

Wow! How did we end up discussing ‘Information Dissemination’ in a topic about ‘Khaw’s Healthcare strategy’?

Based on the arguments between Angelina and the others, one can deduce that there are two different lines of arguments here, and both are valid enough to take a closer look at.

Angelina questions our super-high internet connectivity and why it is not able to do the job it is supposed to do, while others like mice is nice and inix ponders over whether the people handling the job are qualified enough.

It is true that with better internet connectivity, one would expect better information management and dissemination. However, this is dependent upon the people who are responsible for data collection.

From my own experience and from what I see around me in my workplace, I would agree more with inix and mice-is-nice. We can have the best systems, we can have the be[...]

I am branded, not like Prada or Luis Vuitton

Matilah has branded me as alarmist and even irresponsible for highlighting the high cost of H1N1 test. My fear is that some people will not seek treatment or test because the fee is too prohibitive. You only need 5 people infected and walking around, not seeking treatment, and you will have an epidemic in your hand. This is alarmist?Denis Distant also wrote to the paper on the same issue of cost.
