Studies on floral biology, fruit set and fruit development in durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.)

Studies showed that the flower was receptive before anthesis at 5.00 p.m. and remained so until the following morning. Anther dehiscence, however, did not occur until 7.00 p.m., and shortly afterwards the anther lobes fell, together with the other floral parts. By 11.00 p.m. only the pistil remained. Self-incompatibility was observed in the durian trees studied. Reciprocal crosses of the self-incompatible trees set fruit.
