Durian candies contaminated with bacteria – FDA - Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported yesterday that the durian candies that downed 1,925 people in the Caraga region recently were contaminated with staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium commonly found in the skin and nose. In a press briefing, FDA acting deputy director general Maria Lourdes Santiago said the laboratory analysis done on the samples of Wendy’s durian candies showed the presence of the bacteria, although it tested negative for other microorganisms like salmonella and E-Coli. “The findings matched the symptoms manifested by the patients, such as vomiting and stomach ache. It (seemed to be) the cause of poisoning,” Santiago said, adding that the investigation is still being conducted by her office and the police.
