They met when she was just out of being a Wigan school-girl and bonded over a shared ambition to rock the foundations of pop music. Together, Jules and Katie have configured a sound that represents the pure heart of British pop. Their debut album, ‘We Started Nothing’ is littered with snappy choruses trade off against angular guitar work, whipsmart drumming and a succession of loops that they create live with the use of delay pedals. The face of a survivor The face of a survivor: Lucky the koala From Reuters: A koala that cheated death after being hit by a car at 100 kmh (about 60 mph) and dragged with his head jammed through the vehicle grill for 12 kms (about 7 miles) is being dubbed Australia’s luckiest marsupial… “To have him survive and virtually unscathed is quite miraculous,” Australian Wildlife Hospital spokewoman Carolyn Beaton told Reuters Tuesday. “Lucky” hung on during his ordeal with one arm and his trapped head, and was freed with household scissors used like a fireman’s “jaws-of-life” to cut around the car’s mesh grill with the horrified owner’s permission, Beaton said. Lucky will stay at the hospital, set up by the late television wildlife and crocodile crusader Steve Irwin, for 45 days to recover from his experience and receive treatment for a chlamydial infection. As cited from his blog entry: “I am jio-ing everyone to take pictures of yourselves, showing off your nice watches in poses, similar to one of Singapore’s leading style guru, David Gan. You see, on David Gan’s blog, it appears he likes to pose with one arm resting on his shoulder, probably to flaunt his expensive designer watches.” So we couldn’t resist but flash that David Gan pose in office lor. It is an outline the quartet found very agreeable when applying those textures to their music. As Donald Pan (vocals and guitar) explains, “In our songs, there are subtle messages we try to convey, whether through music or through lyrics. It is about differences that might not be noticed.” By doing so, Nuance waxes sonic restraints in their edgy songwriting, crafting out visceral tales around colorful melodies. Being influenced by a vast variety of genres, the band’s repertoire ranges from alt-rock to post-rock, and comes taut with sharp pop sensibilities within explosive cathartics. “Our songs deal with the tormenters and the tormented, from little personal pieces to epics about politics, from losers and drunks to politicians in power”, adds Donald. This has been going around Facebook for awhile and is bound to puzzle you at first read! But the answer’s pretty obvious, lets see if you get it! 3 men go into a motel. The man behind the desk said the room is $30, so each man paid $10 and went to the room. A while later, the man behind the desk realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys’ room with $5. On the way, the bellboy couldn’t figure out how to split the $5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man $1 and kept the other $2 for himself This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27, add the $2 the bellboy kept = $29. Where is the other dollar? Office picture of the week: Water safety We should have known that it would be tough to top last week’s random picture. It was a sudden interest during a snack-spree at Mark & Spencer’s three nights ago. I was given a dollar change and it had ‘1989’ marked on it, so it hit me that it’ll be fun to collect ALL coins mint in 1989. I’ve no idea what’s with me and coins. I remember collecting one-cent coins since secondary school – partly because I didn’t know what to do with them and also after the coin’s retirement, I had a rather childish thought that these one-cent coins might worth more than it is worth now (but then, you’ll never know – maybe some billionaire’s young son from the States might have a sudden interest in collecting coins and he don’t mind paying a million bucks to get a one-cent coin). I’ve been called strange more than a dozen times because of that one-cent hobby. But, I guess this coin hobbies have something to do with my dad who collects those Lunar New Year and foreign coins. Back in primary school, I had another strange hobby of writing down car license plate number. Now grown up, I’ve no idea why my friend and I used to stay up late during those kiddish sleepovers to write down the numbers. It was an obsession we had – it felt like we were spies and sometimes we’ll write suspense fictional stories by watching these cars and their owners (Oh my god! I used to be a weird kid). It’s not only me; celebrities have strange hobbies too. A few months back Simon Cowell (yes, American Idol’s mean judge) revealed his likings of spying on his neighbours. Apart from that, Spider-man star Willem Dafoe used to shoot graphic profiles of his fellow schoolmates. This resulted in his expulsion. A friend I met recently has a very interesting hobby of commuting in buses and find out where each bus takes him to. He is almost the best person to get help from if you are the lazy sorts who hate to do little research (like me! But mainly it is because I love getting lost - you’ll never know what you might discover) as he stated that he has taken almost all the buses except some of those that travels around the East area. Don’t call us strange; we are just too creative you see. =)) Technorati Tags: strange hobby, coins, simon cowell, willem dafoe Whatever fabrikade Youth.SG goes shopping today! And I thought that tagline was cheesy, but close to 800 secondary school students certainly caught the green virus last Saturday, 14th June, as part of the National Youth EnvirOlympics Challenge, which was inspired by the spirit of the Olympic Games! I’m actually a little midget under Publicity in the Organising Committee, so I went down to sneak a peek at the Closing Ceremony, which was held at Hougang Central. If I were in the right attire, I could have received a certificate from the GOH, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr George Yeo himself! The participants and facilitators alike were really high when I saw them, guess they must have had tremendous fun throughout the day. In fact, I saw a couple of teams at the MRT station earlier in the day, carrying lots of barang barang which consisted of cardboard boxes and empty cans and bottles. Some of their adventures included disseminating recycling bags to households and educating these households on recycling practices to live by. The teams also had to build a sculpture using recycled materials at one station. The Closing Ceremony was pretty entertaining. On top of the usual award and certificate presentations, there were exhibition booths on environmental messages, Miss Earth finalists parading around and as well as a Longest Length of Thumbprints record-breaking event which earned itself a place in Singapore’s Guinness Book of Records. The ceremony then closed with rock band performances, and very hard rock indeed. Youth.SG checked out the winning team! Some girl power!
