Blog Reboot Today is one of those days where I end school super early and enjoy a pleasure afternoon blasting my music in my bedroom.Though there are many things and projects to rush and business ideas to think of, I suddenly realized that 1 cannot go on working off crazily like a mad dog.I have been thinking to myself to this purpose of this blog.Should it remain or should it go? Starting my own Building Fund My italian teacher popped my an MSN saying that I should start saving for my own house.I think it's the best time for me to start my building fund too because I really want to buy a house that is paid fully by cash and be debt free. Buying a car is too expensive because the maintenance is mind boggling - probably about $800 to $900 for a small 1.5L saloon car.Ways to save up for my building fund is simple:Stop taking the taxis to school every week. I tend to save about $300 per year.Reduce eating at restaurants every month. I tend to save about $2500 per year.Reduce buying IT gadgets like iPod video or iPhone. I tend to save about $5000 per year.If you add all these up, I tend to save about $7800 per year! Multiply by 5 years which is equals to $39000, place in the less riskiest money making instruments like Australian fixed deposits to earn a small sum of interest.Crazy thinking.. Time to move on.. These few days have been very tiring on me.I have to compile reports and create presentations.I can sincerely say from the bottom of heart that today's presentation is one of the worst I have ever done. I somehow lost the leadership spirit to lead my team for projects anymore. You will understand more if you read on my Classroom Politics, Anyone? .I also got back several test results this week and it was a major disappointment. But this time around, I know the reason very well why I did badly. Partly my fault, and partly others. I can't say so much here because there are eyes around this blog. But to sum everything up, I dined with 2 pretty ladies at Swensens yesterday and crash out with the global citizenship team at Subway straight after the test.I'm looking forward for the next phase of my studies and I am going to prove to her that I am a no pushover by the actions that I am going to take.I'm taking a break for now.. Classroom Politics, Anyone? I'm definitely sure everyone has heard of office politics. But have you ever heard of classroom politics in a classroom before?Classroom politics often happen when the class is divided into cliques, where the different cliques have different topics to say and talk about daily. So apparently, I happen to be in clique D where its supposed to be very united altogether.Along the way since the start of poly life, I soon discovered that there are people in my group whom I can't work with anymore because the many different reasons of which I can think of in my mind. So much for being good friends all the way!I also realized that there are also people who are actually free riders, tapping on to others to gain a better foothold for themselves. I'm sorry to say that I can no longer tolerate, and am not willing to go all the way out for them because it has taken a toll on my results all these while. I am definitely not happy to see them getting better results than I do, even though I put in 110% effort into it.Lecturers are going to distribute assignments next week to the class and there are already 2 groups who have expressed interests for me to join them. I have yet to reply them but I'm more or less settled to leave my current clique. I want to move on where I am able to mix with people who challenge me to learn and think even more, and not challenge me to complete more of their assignments and work for them.I should say that everyone is fighting for someone in class, but my question is, would they be able to achieve what they want by doing it the way they are currently doing right now? Can Smoking Help Businesses Grow? I have been thinking recently, or actually for a long time. Can smoking really help improve my business? From the observations I had in France of my friend, smoking really did bond him and the locals together despite the language barrier. It was like talking to a long lost friend whom he has not seen for a long time.Another incident was at Boat Quay where my business partner requested a smoking break from a meeting. The client decided to join him for a smoke and after they came back, they managed to clarify and settle down with points of which they were arguing before the break and during the break itself. The meeting went smoothly after and the deal was done.I personally do hate smoking and the smell of it. But I can't help to notice that smokers always get along pretty well as compared to people who don't smoke.Am I being just over sensitive on this issue? My younger brother smokes just as well. We just came back from our mini Batam getaway holiday proved to me that he smokes really hard. While he smokes not as hard as 5 packets a day, it's scary enough to know that he started very young.Through smoking, he got to know many professionals in various industries like the banking, airline, F n B industries, bla bla bla, just to mention a few. He goes out with them regularly to dine and chill out too. His contacts made him a little more "privilleged" than me, because I don't have these many contacts! Most of the successful business people that I know either smoke cigarettes or cigars too.I was very tempted to smoke because my brother had offered me a stick each time he lighted up one. On one end, it kills me faster, on another it might help me in my business in time to come. What do you think? Join ACE "Why Not?" Contest and Win $1000! Blog2u.sg has kindly given me the opportunity to share with my readers about the Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE)'s contest. So you must be wondering what exactly is ACE all about?ACE, as a public and private sector collaboration, is made up of a team of established entrepreneurs, led by the Minister in charge of Entrepreneurship and supported by a multi-agency Secretariat.ACE for 4 Action Crucibles (AC), namely Culture, Financing, Rules and Internationalization. ACE has catalyzed changes by formulating and putting together many initiatives to evolve a new culture and environment that is pro-enterprise. Below are some of ACE's key milestones and achievements.ACE extends its hands to invite you to submit your new ideas to nurture a more entrepreneurial Singapore today. An idea is never too unrealistic, too old fashioned or undoable unless you take that step out of your comfort zone and act on it!Examples of Why Not? Ideas:Create an online portal where aspiring entrepreneurs can apply for multiple business licenses from various government agencies at one go.Make government rules more flexible when new promising new business ideas justify so.Allot land in the Master Plan to attract investors with product/service offerings not yet available in Singapore.Provide start-ups access to funding without the need of a prospectus.Start a pool of mentors consisting of successful entrepreneurs to mentor promising new entrepreneurs.Decrease red-tape by increasing bureaucratic coordination amongst government agencies.Provide consultants and experts for aspiring entrepreneurs with innovative ideas but no technical know-how to tap on.This contest is definitely ideal to anyone who has that darn good idea to turn Singapore into a better place to work, invest and stay in the future. Anyone who is interested can click here to fill up the application form. The winners with the most creative idea will walk home with that $1000. $500 or $300 respectively.Closing date for the contest is on the17th of July 2008. Results will be announced end of July 2008 and winners will be contacted directly. You can click here to enter ACE contest page to participate. Projects Marathon.. Let me apologize for not blogging this week or any of these few days.Just this week, I have 4 major project assignments to be completed and submitted! And to tell you the truth, I have been wide awake for the past 48 hours, gulping 3 in 1 coffee and red bull from the nearby 7-11 to complete my foreign exchange and money market report.I still have at least 4 other major presentations and projects to go before I can settle down to blog properly though. But do look out for my new skin this weekend.I am taking a sabbatical from assignments to redesign my blog to add new contents. :)See you soon! The day I blasted at Starhub! You all remembered that I went to London and Paris for a week?Yesterday I got a shocking bill on my mobile bill! $103.990To someone who travels alot, this amount may not be significant. But to me, it meant alot because I PAY MY OWN BILLS! Cash flow had not been very going for the month of May and June because money is not trickling in. Expecting me to pay that amount of money is ridiculous. There were 2 items reflected on the bill on which I was totally frustrated about:I got CHARGED for Gee! Usage of a total of $3.85, when I don't even have GPRS activated on my mobile. My younger brother's bill also got reflected with Gee! Usage even though his phone is not an Internet enabled phone!I got CHARGED for calling 1633 in London, having to wait over 8 minutes and 34 seconds, for a total of $31.50! I mean I have to pay to call Starhub for help when I am overseas trying to make business calls out? What nonsense is this?I was so totally fed up with the customer service officer as I explained every single bit of detail to them. Worst off, the waiting time for Starhub's customer support is getting longer and longer.Give me lousy service again, and I make sure I will not extend my contract, my maxonline and my cable tv with you! Update on TYB I got an sms from a friend who has been tracking my blog, lamenting that my blog is dead.I'm sorry folks but I am really too busy at this moment of time, so many reports and designing stuffs to do, not forgetting the sweltering heat!Well, The Young Businessman will be going for a major overhaul which probably might impress you one way or another.More details will be released soon. Back from London and Paris! After a 12.5 hour flight from Paris, I am finally back from London and Paris after 1 week of school trip. Very fun with lots of pictures taken which will be uploaded soon.First stop to clear all my overflowing emails in my inboxes and to settle Student Blog Project. My international roaming was locked out and I could not call back and call out to make the necessary arrangements with the overseas host. Wireless costs 5 pounds per hour and I did not have the opportunity to access. Will update again.. Less 24 Hours to London.. I am flying to London and Paris for a week for a study trip. But again, I am also taking a sabbatical on all my works during this 1 week. I have been working both backend and front end for a long time and I think I really deserve this 1 week break. Going to London and Paris is also probably one of the biggest dream come through this year yet. That aside, I just finished 1 week of grueling examinations for my major modules. I am almost sleep deprived because of the time and energy spent on memorizing those words. Today's killer paper was a smooth cruise considered that the last batch did very badly for it.Well, I have to make a long list of things to buy over at London and Paris and I have to start writing soon because I am running late for another meeting soon. No Need to be Afraid of VueStar! If you have received an invoice or a lawyer's letter to pay up to the company, VueStar, here is an interesting piece of happy news of which you can be happy about:Dear Editor, I had received a reply through writing to my MP from IPOS, Director-General, Ms Liew Woon Yin with regards to the issue concerning Vuestar. Some of the comments she made could have been discussed before but it is good probably to post this official reply to your site. Please note that I had sought her approval to publish publicly and specifically I had informed her that I would be sharing this to you. She had replied to me this morning that it was ok to published her comments. Here you go: 1. We refer to your email of 28 May 08 to Dr Ong Seh Hong regarding VueStar Technologies Pte Ltd. 2. According to IPOS’ records, the patent for “Method of locating web-pages by utilising visual images” (Singapore Patent No. 95940) stands in the name of Langford, Ronald, N. The patent was granted in Singapore, albeit not to VueStar, on the basis of a search and examination obtained via an international process known as the Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT) process. Under Section 29 of the Patents Act, IPOS accepted the search and examination results issued under the PCT. The International Preliminary Examination Report that was issued stated the invention as being patentable in terms of novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability. Broadly speaking, the patent has also been granted in Australia, New Zealand and the US. 3. Whilst the proprietor of a patent can consider using licensing of his patent rights to secure income, this is subject to entering into license agreements with parties who may be interested in using the invention, and is not done arbitrarily. A proprietor usually demands payment from companies on the basis that the companies ought to have entered into licensing agreements with it in the first place. 4. As Singapore Patent No. 95940 was not granted to VueStar, the relationship between VueStar and the patentee would first have to be ascertained before the question of whether VueStar can actually demand payment arises. The basis on which VueStar is making their demand and their interest in the patent certainly requires examination. 5. Any party who receives an invoice from VueStar should seek the advice of a lawyer on the matter as it may involve broad-ranging issues for consideration. 6. Under the Patents Act and Rules, the validity of a patent may be challenged by way of defence in proceedings for patent infringements. There are also other relevant provisions: a) Section 38A under which any person may request for a search and examination report after grant, upon payment of the prescribed fee, in respect of any claim or claims in the specification of a patent. b) Section 80 under which any person may apply to revoke a patent for an invention on any of a number of grounds set out in the section, one of which being that the invention is not a patentable invention. 7. We thank you for your feedback and trust the above addresses your concerns. Best Regards, Liew Woon Yin (Ms)IPOS Director-GeneralArticle extracted from RefuteVueStarPatent.biz with Reference to Upset Singaporean. Happy Birthday The Young Businessman! Happy Birthday The Young Businessman!May 31st 2007 was your first maiden post with a similar style like Cobalt Paladin because you were inspired to be like him as an entrepreneur. (but it didn't)Things have gone pretty smoothly with some ups and some downs through social and virtual life.Through you, I am really glad to meet so many people that supported me throughout the past year.Through you, I hope we can work towards for the better in this coming year.In the meanwhile, I am proud to feature The Young Businessman's featured partner: Money Tree SingaporeAbout MoneyTree:MoneyTree was established to provide the financial skill and knowledge to youths aged 9 – 22 , which would be required to build a career or business, as well as plan for their financial freedom. It has been created to fill the void left by the education system and school curriculum and to explore the opportunities available worldwide to further the dissemination and propagation of high-quality e-learning programmes utilising state of the art technology, and to groom the next generation of entrepreneurs.Happy Birthday TYB! How to understand your readers better? If you are running a business which relies on the Internet, the most important thing that you should know and to do is to understand your readers - understand what they need and want, not what you want to promote and sell.Your readers are not really interested in the things that you do unless you are a popular blogger before you enter the entrepreneurial scene. Readers often associate good experience and snapshot moments to an online company based on the information and product specifications provided online. If you have a company blog, SHARE and FILL the blog with event pictures and post event thoughts and how the company can better engage in the future. Video casts and podcasts would also be good alternatives. It is definitely hard to crack the mystery code on how and when would people stumble across your company blog, but when they do, its your job to convert them from a passing by reader to a subscribed reader, or even an important sales lead! There are 5 reads which I highly recommend for any company who has a public blog:Optimizing your blog for your readers - Better Business BloggingHow to write a better weblog - A List ApartDo you know your visitors? 5 points to consider - Daily Blog TipsHow to know if your readers are engaged? - Blog Herald9 steps to convert website visitors into leads from Engago Technologies - ZDNet(you will need to register to download the whitepaper)The Young Businessman Serious Web Hosting Advices This post is going to be a long post especially for people who uses web hosting services.I just got off the phone with one of my friend who provides me web hosting services for several of my blogs. I wanted to use the word 'reliable' but it don't seem to fit the description as of the situation that I am in right now.The problem started when the website/server went down early this year because of a DOS attack. I tried contacting my friend but he kept canceling the call and would reply me hours later saying it was a DOS attack.Just last month, the server crashed yet again, this time with some major clients together in it. Everyone of us could not even access our webmails or our email clients. The downtime was close to 36 37 hours. That day, my friend and I had the most earfuls as compared to the rest of the years working as a web hosting provider. Several big clients left because of this issue thinking that this would happening frequently.I did try calling my friend for the whole day but was always diverted to the voicemail. I tied asking my other friends who had reseller accounts with him but they were also stuck! Eventually after the 36 37 hours, an SLA was served saying that there was a DOS attack and the network engineers tried their best to remove and prevent the attacks. What have I learnt and what I can tell you:Web hosting is a serious business and customer service is one of the most important point of contact if anything goes wrong. Never ever subscribe to a web hosting service even if your friend is a best friend and there is no company fronting it. (meaning the company is not registered)Make sure before you subscribe to any web hosting service, CALL and ASK and ENQUIRE about the precautions which would be taken in case of any downtimes. Make sure that you got the office number saved in your phone book. If possible, get the HP number of the person whom you are dealing with to get an explanation if anything goes wrong. (Sadly in singapore's case, most web hosting providers cant be bothered to pick any calls)Choose local service providers, not overseas. I know its dirt cheap and promises alot of things but can you use up all? Pay for what you need and not what you want. Make sure you do research on the web hosting companies by reading reviews or ask someone who is a customer of theirs. When everything goes wrong, at least you can still sue the company locally for any loss of potential income.Read the terms and conditions properly. Check for fine prints. Make sure you understand all the terms and conditions set by the company if there is any. Make sure you get your doubts cleared before you sign. For example: Student Blog Project's domain is currently hosted by Midphase, purchased through eNom. I wanted to transfer from the US side to Singapore side and it is really annoying and irritating because it takes weeks for them to send an automated message and months to send a human mail!If a web hosting provider allows communications through live help only, with a telephone number which is automated. Please look for another company who is willing to dedicate their services to serve and provide for you in a more humanly way.Recently, a local blog advertising company was down for close to 48 hours or so because of a bad web host. A local popular blogger was also affected because his blog was down for more than 12 hours, thus affecting his blog traffic. This is definitely not a paid post by any web hosting company to support their services. Now, I am stuck but I am looking for better ways to serve my clients better while not affecting their current performance. If you know of any comments to add, please feel free to do so.. going for The Young Businessman 2.0 My last post on The Young Businessman was on 12th of May asking if people knew how to have continuous stream of USD1k passive income monthly.Ever since that post, I received about 6 emails regarding the actions and steps to be taken to earn that passive income. I also received about 15 complaints on why I did not post any follow ups on the previous post I made. No! It's not because I'm lazy but because I'm buried with projects and assignments! @@#%#^(And now everywhere I go, it seems to me that the need to have a proper name card that spells out what I do besides studying is getting really urgent! My close friends all know I am the young businessman. My friends' friends also know I am the young businessman, but they don't know what I really do.It is a pressing need for me to revamp my blog to be more focused, instead of just posting nonsense, though thats how those bloggers who were featured in the Digital Life papers earned their extra pocket monies. I need to remove all the irrelevant posts especially those sponsored posts from PPP and some other third party ones as well.I want to launch The Young Businessman 2.0, probably with a loud bang or something. I already had in mind what to do with it. Let me share with you (just in case you want to sponsor my hosting and domain name registration and money to blog) :The Young Businessman 2.o will be a showcase of pictures and after thoughts from social networking events, conferences and seminars and sponsors. The Young Businessman 2.o will be a place where people can read original and interesting concepts of business ideas which I have in mind. Visitors are free to comment and criticize at any point they feel its a lousy or bad idea. The Young Businessman 2.o will be a place young budding entrepreneurs can learn from the mistakes which I made through a series which I have in mind, which is to be launched in the later part of the year. The Young Businessman 2.o will be a place where my blog and my reputation will go up another level. The Young Businessman 2.o will be a place where you can request and read interviews of people whom you want to know more about in the local business arena. And yes, I feel regretful with some things which I should have done ages ago.If you are interested to sponsor me, I am open to ideas and suggestions, just drop me a mail. I'll be more than happy to talk to you.till then! 1 month Passive income of USD1k? We went to many places because she wanted to enjoy.I just can't tell her I like her because I'm afraid of rejection, I'm afraid that its doom day like it happened the other time.God, you have to be fair this time around. I want to know her well but she is unwilling. I want to ask her out and she keeps ignoring me that question.God, in the meanwhile, while I'm trying to ask her out, please answer my prayers okay? She is my precious.......cash module. Why so many websites? I don't know about you, but when I read about The Media Slut's post on SoShiok.com, I feel a sense of loss, misled in directions and probably confused.ST701.comI remembered when St701.com was launched, the newspaper was doing its rounds by educating job seekers how to use the website by searching relevantly. To many advertisers, it was probably the answer for cheaper advertising for jobs. To the users, it could be the next generation of job searching. Then, they introduced Spree @ ST701.com where consumers can shop for the things that they are looking for, or interested in, hoping to catch on the wave of online shopping.Mocca.comNext, shortly after Mocca.com was introduced as the next big thing online to shop for and place advertisements. With advertisements on print, on radio, on TV, at bus stops, you would not miss their "Want to See More? Call this number" motto.Personal testimonials were used to educate users how efficient and effective the portal was, hoping to generate a new buzz accordingly to the trend.Stomp.com.sgStomp was introduced a few months before ST701.com was launched. It's primarily purpose is to allow the public, who are registered with them to communicate, chat via forums and share, upload pictures/videos online.Till date, it is considered one of the most successful ventures of all.You also have:http://www.xin.sg/http://www.omy.sg/http://rednano.sg/I got a few questions which really made me ponder:Is Singapore market that big to create so many online shopping portals when we already have so many shopping malls to visit and dine around with? How many people actually enjoy using the services that these websites provide as a whole as compared to competitors like eBay.com or Yello Classifieds by MSN?Will SPH or Mediacorp raise its consumer prices for their products like TV licenses and newspapers soon because of the on going expensive advertising campaigns they have their websites? What impact do they have on consumers and online readers in the long run?Who benefit from these websites the most? The advertisers or the consumers or the companies providing the content itself? Are you really interested or into these kind of online portals? What do you think? Singapore's media too social?Note: Because of DK's complaint, you no longer need to do comment verification. :) What I have done? (14/04 - 18/04) Sorry for the utterly of updates. Allow me to run you through what I have done during the last 5 days of my freedom.14/04 and 15/04I have been wanting to update my educational portal for a very long time since Wordpress 2.5 was released. Finally had the vendor to upgrade Installatron V3 and I decided to update myself. These 2 days were very frustrating and depressing because the whole database of posts were wiped out.It was so fortunate that the template which I was eyeing was taken off the web because the author decided to close his website down. How ironic things could be! And yes, finally after 2 crazy days of nonstop work, Student Blog Project 2.0 was launched. Received alot of feedbacks from supporters of it and improvements for it as well.16/04Dedicated this day to read on cholesterol and to work on some technical stuffs which the virtual community require. Was pretty troublesome because whenever a designer uses a person's face, the company faces risks of getting sued for infringing copyrights. Nevertheless, I had some breakthrough on some areas like the navigation and accessibility! And yes, the community has grown to 14 members! More was be done. More concentrated efforts must be in place to keep up with the sales.17/04Spent the whole morning reading, replying and organizing emails. Started at 9am and ended at 12pm. Wasn't a good experience, but I needed to get organized otherwise when school starts, everything would be topsy turvy.Met with a very good friend and his finance to discuss new business ideas. I always feel good sharing ideas with him. Been with him as a friend since 2005 till now. And yes, he is a very good business person. I have been pestering him to join Google Singapore, but he won't budge unless Steve Jobs invited him.Ended the meeting on a good note, noting that I have a book to pass to him. Spent the whole evening doing platform testing on a new portal which would be launched in a couple of weeks time. I don't know why, but whenever I touch the portal, my eyes would fail on me. probably because I was reading too much instruction manuals. While upgrading from WP 2.3.3 to WP2.5, all the data within Student Blog Project was wiped off from the website. What you are currently seeing now is the safe mode which I backed up just before I upgraded. Now it is running on WP 2.5, but I still can't find a suitable theme to match this educational portal. If you have suggestions, please drop me an email.I'm really desperate. Oh yes, the theme that you are looking at is a temporary one. I have to wait until the end of the FY to wipe everything out and restart the whole website again.God please help!
