SGDaily Roundup: What’s Hot in Week 20 Map credits: jaunted (Blue key - Epicenter of earthquake) (Yellow & Red keys - Dujiangyan Irrigation System) This week, our papers were covered with photographs of the devastating Sichuan earthquake. The Chinese government is handling the crisis with amazing efficiency. The death toll is estimated to be 50, 000. Now, the Zipingpu dam threatens to collapse. The China authorities has taken the initiative to seek international aid to prevent the dam from collapsing. This is such a stark contrast when it comes to the inert Burmese government. The results of the election did not come as a surprise. Considering the junta is holding onto the aid for the Burmese, we cannot help but to wonder what would happen to the supplies if the junta lost the election. In local news, it’s all about the $$$. Transport Minister Raymond Lim revealed that current signages for the ERP gantries “are too small to be read by motorists”. Now, the 70 ERP gantries are due for “upgrading” and the tabs comes to $4.55 million. $4.55 million because someone lack the foresight to make the signs bigger. $4.55 million… What about the needy? How many lift upgrades can be done at the residential estates? Vehicles get more priority than us humans. The Straits Times on Friday informed that matriarch Mrs Lee suffered from a stroke. We at Singapore Daily empathise with her condition. However, we cannot see why there was a “What is a stroke?” diagram in the article. We are pretty sure that it is not the first time our favourite newspaper printed the word ’stroke’. Ma’am, we sincerely wish you well. Have a good long weekend. P.S. On 12 May, The New Paper reported that Singaporeans have donated $906,000 to aid Burma. It is moving to note that amidst the inflation, Singaporeans have not forgotten how to give. Well done Singaporeans ^_^! P.P.S. Move over Iron Man, our latest hero is *drum roll please* Chinese Premier Wen Jia Bao! While the junta remains stubborn and has witheld the handing out of relief packages, the international committee is once again, trying all means to help the victims and carry out relief operations. To see how each and every one of us can help, click here and here. Now in local news, Bishan is supposed to be the estate with the best ‘fengshui’. If you would like to attain wealth (however tangible), Bishan is the auspicious place to stay! Aljunied has decided to outdo Bishan by attaining material wealth for its constituency by implementing a ‘fine’ system for the dirtiest precincts. Now the black sheep who treats his/her precinct as a personal garbage bin escapes legal prosecution, evades the bright Corrective Work Order vest and drags the rest of the innocent residents into paying for his/her trash. How does this teach the litterbug a lesson or in diplomatic terms, nip the problem in the bud? Who knows, this may give Aljunied greater reason to expand its GRC in the next elections. Perhaps a resident vigilante would have on standby, an ever ready can of Baygon to rain on that selfish litterbug. Phui! The Straits Times continues to suggest that NTuC is the best place to shop for cheap groceries. Even the neighbourhood Aunty Lucy knows that this is not true. Aunty Lucy may not frequent Cold Storage or The Marketplace, but she knows that the prices between NTuC, Sheng Siong, Giant and Carrefour (even though she has difficulties in pronouncing it) “can fight one”. In pink and censorship news, MICA/MDA has lifted its ban on Wilde and the film would be released uncut. The 1997 film that tells the story of the barbed wit writer and poet Oscar Wilde. The film’s gala premiere is slated for 13 May on Tuesday. Who can forget Wilde’s famous lines uttered a month before his death? While lying in bed in a hotel room in Paris stripped of his extravagances, he quipped “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or other of us has to go.” See, even MICA/MDA knows how to audit and rethink its decisions. There is still light at the end of the tunnel.
