Singapore Fireworks Celebrations 2008 Dad was given 4 tickets for Singapore Fireworks Celebrations 2008. It was held at Marina Bay Floating Gallery.I fell sick and wasn't able to attend it. Mom and Dad went with two of her students. It was raining heavily the whole day, but the viewing galleries were packed with spectators. Many more lined the Marina Bay area. They watched the firework display in the drizzle for the whole evening. hehe. There were food stalls selling all types of food for the early spectators. The show started at 9 pm but the spectators had to go at 5.30 pm. It was hours of waiting and I heard the whole Marina Bay was very very crowded. That night, it was firework display by a Korean team. The night before this, it was the French team and I heard it was more spectacular!!Cute girls from Tanjong Katong Secondary School band.Tanjong Katong Secondary School band, which is the champion school band in Singapore, performed at this event.Marina Bay Floating Gallery Durian Season is Over! Durians! Durians! This year, the durian harvest was very good! There were lots of durians and some were very delicious! The prices of durians came down due to the huge supply and there were small durians going for 50 cents each!Having eaten some good grade durians, you would never want to go back to the cheapskates.D24 durian, one seed is the size on Mom's fist!D24 was considered very good grade durians years ago. This year there were many new species and D24 has become ordinary. For S$20, you can get 3 good sized D24 durians. Some taste sweet, some taste bitter.Red Prawn specieThis specie of durian is sweet and creamy, the flesh is reddish. Not very expensive, we bought for S$8 per kilo. The King - Mao Shan Wang (Wild Cat specie)The Mao Shan Wang is considered the best of all durians now! It tastes bitter, creamy and smooth. Depending on availability, the price rises and falls like shares. hehe. We bought this for S$15 per kilo. Many foreign visitors whom we brought to eat durians couldn't take the pungent smell. :P Some come from countries that love eating smelly rotting cheese, some come from China and Taiwan where they put smelly tofu into their mouths! They puke when they pass a durian stall. haha 24 hours Chai Chee Minced Meat Noodles (East Coast Road) Where do you go to look for food at 2 in the morning? My usual place is this noodle stall just a stone's throw from my house. It's open 24 hours. Any time of the day, I can have a hot steaming bowl of delicious noodles. My favourite is the dry version.MeePok Dry (Flat Noodles)Chai Chee Noodles at 2 amDeep-fried crispy fish skin They sell some side dishes as well. It has a Summer Promotion Menu and some of the dishes looked unique. Looks like a fusion of Western and Japanese. It's my first time to this sushi branch. We were lead to the inner dining room where there were cosy seats for two or tables for a bigger group with privacy. The prices at this restaurant was reasonable but the bulky tables and round seats take up much space, cutting down on the number of diners the restaurant could have seated. That's opportunity loss.Having studied restaurant management in my class, I couldn't help criticising the food and observing the management of restaurants whenever I go to one. :PSoft Shell Crab PastaThis pasta was a surprise! I love the pasta sauce which the spaghetti was cooked in. Light, not too overpowering. A lovely fusion. I enjoy having the fish roes go popping in my mouth. :)Seafood Hot PotThe soup of this seafood hot pot which my Mom ordered was very flavourful! I didn't have enough of it!Deep-fried sushiOf the sushi eaten that night, this deep-fried version was the star of the night! The sashimi that Sushi Tei served at this branch and the recently opened branch at Big Splash was too good! Fresh and not too expensive. We ordered a few rounds of it!Sushi Tei Raffles City Fell sick again The past few days I was having tummy upsets, not due to the food I ate. I haven't been eating much, I lost my appetite and was only eating mouthfuls of my meal each time. I was preparing dinner at the restaurant on Friday evening when the pain hit me.I started to vomit. I threw up another few more times until I vomitted only yellow bitter bile. I was exhausted. Chef told me to get my parents to bring me home. I called Mom. She and Dad came to fetch me to see a doctor in Marine Parade. The clinic was packed, we had to wait an hour to see Dr Singh. After an examination, I was given a jab. Dr Singh said my face had turned green. He is a careful doctor, he spent half an hour with us, going through my medical history and trying to help.I was prescribed medication and given 2 days medical leave. Offering Prayers to our Ancestors On the 15th day of the lunar 7th month (Hungry Ghost Festival) in the Chinese calendar, the Chinese have to give and burn offerings to their ancestors. The same goes for my family. We didn't cook elaborate meals like before to offer them, just some of their favourite dishes which we bought and fruits.Mom bought some fashionable offerings for her grandparents. I was surprised at the variety. There were mobile phones, credit cards, cheque books and even passports. they were very well made.Paper offerings : Hell money and joss sticksMy ancestors are going to be millionaires! :) We burnt all the paper money and clothings to our ancestors. Cafe Cartel East Coast Branch It's not frequent that I can have supper with my parents. They do it very often with their friends but tonight, there were just the 3 of us.I suggested Cafe Cartel because it has been a long time since I last went there. When I was in primary and secondary schools, my parents used to bring me to this restaurant because I love its bread. It's free flow of bread..... eat-all-you-can! And their crusty bread is very good. But tonight, the bread was yucky. There were some changes to their menu, service and products. And the cafe wasn't as crowded as before. It used to be packed and even at a late hour, we had to wait for a table. Its Carbonara was so-so but worth a eat if you are not fussy.Cafe Cartel's still awesome Pork Ribs!Free Cappuccino and Tiramisu cake for Dad whose birthday falls in August. That's a nice gesture for the birthday boy. :)Cafe Cartel (East Coast branch) Asian Night 2008 by Jaymes and team My culinary course classmates and the classmates from Pastry and Baking will be catering for this dinner event from dates 21st to 23rd August and 28th to 30th August 2008. It will be at Charcoal Restaurant.A lunch menu (minus the kiwi sherbet and dessert) will be served from now until end of August. This event will make up 80% of our results. :P Already I'm having problems with the marketing team because they didn't get the tickets ready, they were supposed to do it 2 weeks ago. I'm in the cooking team but spent the whole of yesterday and today helping them to rush the tickets and posters out.I hope the event will go smoothly. Felicia Chin who is the Brand Ambassador for Vitagen was also at the fair. Knowing that I like Felicia Chin, Mom helped me to take photos of her.OMG! I'm surprised that Mom could get so close to her and even shook her hands and took a picture with her!Mom didn't like Felicia Chin at first because she found her to be overacting when she appears in the TV dramas. But Mom saw a friendly, well-mannered and down-to-earth Felicia that day. She said Felicia was kind to her fans and obliging to their requests for photos and autographs. And most importantly, from the way she treated the young kids who came running to her. She was patient and understanding with the shy ones. She took an interest in the kids, asking about their school etc. Mom was impressed. See, I have good taste. heheFelicia autographed the photo that she took with Mom.How I wish I were there! Chefs are not stupid! I'm reluctant to tell people I'm training to be a chef. Why do most people think I must be stupid or I didn't do well in my studies so I have to be a chef? I did well in my secondary school and I choose to go to SHATEC because I'm interested in cooking. I want to be a chef. Also, SHATEC has a good programme to train people like me, who have an interest in cooking and want to take up a professional course. Those ignorant people are not just uneducated ones, even highly-educated ones look down on chefs. The other day, a well-known specialist in a top private hospital announced to my Mom and I, he would send his son to SHATEC if he couldn't study. Mom retorted that nowadays even oversea graduates are switching careers and taking up cooking courses. We have some very talented chefs in Singapore, Sam Leong, Jimmy Chok, Eric Teo, Randy Chow... etc. They may not have high academic qualifications but they are well-known for their culinary skills. I aim to be like them, they are my learning models.Chefs are not stupid. Cross the Bridge Noodles Chef's Special Cross the Bridge Rice Noodles S$7.80 I went to Bugis to watch a movie with my friends. Before the movie we had dinner at a new Chinese restaurant. It's speciality is its Cross the Bridge Rice Noodles (过桥米线). Mom ate this dish when she was in China. It has a love story to it.There are 3 types of prices, maybe priced according to the number of saucers of ingredients. I ordered the Chef's Speciality which is S$7.80 and comes with 12 saucers of ingredients. The bowl of boiling hot soup was huge! I'm supposed to put in the raw ingredients first, followed by the rest. The soup was not cooked long enough, it lacks flavour and sweetness.I would like to try this dish in China. When Mom goes on her next business trip, I'll follow. :)Hong Guo @ Bugis Junction200 Victoria Street B1-06AParco Bugis Junction Oreo Donut for 50 cents Another donut store opened and it was in Ang Mo Kio. We were passing by on our way to shop for groceries when a staff stuffed a flyer into my hands. For its opening special, it offered an Oreo Donut for 50 cents. Cheap! We asked for more flyers and queued to buy the donuts. One person is entitled to only one special donut. The donuts were hot from the oven and were fluffy soft. They were delicious. I asked the staff if I could buy another one at the special price. She gave me another flyer. The rest of the party wanted another one too.And on the way home, we bought more for breakfast tomorrow. :) I was stabbed... My Chef Knife setI brought back my Chef knife set from school last Friday because I need it at the restaurant where I'm going for on-the-job training for the next few weeks.I was cleaning the knives after dinner when Mom, who has not seen them, started playing with them. Yes, you think my Mom is smart and would not do such a thing..... play with sharp objects. Suddenly, she poked my tummy with the fork."Ouchhhh!!" Immediately I jumped up in pain and dropped the knife I was cleaning. There was blood. Mom was shocked at what she had done. She didn't realised the fork was that sharp. It can pierce a chicken, ok!If I was the one who stabbed her with the fork, I would surely be dead. :P Farewell Dinner, Seoul Garden Bugis The little boy from Taiwan will be going home on Saturday. My maid is going home in September. So we had an excuse to eat out. We met in Bugis Junction after picking the little boy from school.Mom and her foreign guests ate Japanese food. We preferred Korean BBQ Buffet. We were left on our own. The halal buffet spread does not have much variety. There is lots of meats. It was fun cooking our own meats on a hot plate. The little boy had fun 'playing' with his food and he went wild with the free flow soft drinks and ice-cream! :D He's amazing! He could eat and eat and eat and eat.....We started eating from 5.30 pm until 9pm. And we went home by ourselves. Luckily the little boy was less hyperactive after all that food. He slept in the bus soon after boarding it..... Golden Pillow - Curry Chicken in a Loaf A week ago, Mom bought 20 boxes of this Curry Chicken in a Loaf. She was given a special discount so she bought for our relatives and friends. And she started delivering the still hot from the oven loaves to them.We have seen this bun being sold near our house but we have resisted buying it. Since it is on promotion, Mom decided to try it.dip bread pieces in Yummy curry chicken It was still warm when we cut it open. The bread was a bit thick, soft and tasted slightly sweet. The curry was too little but it was yummy and spicy enough. We couldn't finish the bread and had it toasted the next day. It tasted very good when toasted and eaten with butter! Curry Chicken bun goes for S$12.80 and Curry Mutton Bun at S$15.80. 195 East Coast Road I desire an OMNIA Samsung! The Samsung Omnia i900 touchscreen mobile is an iPhone lookalike, said to be an iPhone killer. I couldn't agree more. It was officially launched at the CommunicAsia 2008. Mom went, saw and touched it. grrr......OMNIA, means ‘everything’ in Latin and ‘wish’ in Arabic. I want Omnia! I Omnia for a Samsung mobile!! hehe.... Samsung Omnia handset!I went down to Singtel to have a look at the Samsung Omnia i900. It is a device that is full of features! With a 3.2-inch LCD (240 x 400) screen, it still looks slim. Best is, it has a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash! Wow! 5-megapixel! It would come in handy when I create new dishes and need to take photos of it.The video recording is also useful for me. Hey, I can do video editing too! It comes with Trim Video, Audio Dubbing and Live Dubbing! Can even add subtitle! How cool is that!I'm training to be a chef. This awesome device would be very useful for me to store my recipes and photos of my creations or creative dishes of other chefs. It's also an office on the go! I can read and send emails, manage my appointments (not many at this time, hehehe.....) ..... at the same time, do my admin work! All at the touch of a finger!! And can just use one hand to control! I'm going to recommend this to my lecturers who are chefs in top hotels in Singapore! This is so exciting! At a cost of S$1098, it would take me months of saving to own it. I only earn S$5 per hour doing part-time, waiting at tables. :(Make my Omnia come true!! Prayers on Hungry Ghosts Festival I was at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum with my Dad to offer prayers. As it is the Hungry Ghosts Festival now, we have to pray for our ancestors so they will be safe and have plenty to 'spend'.There will be prayer chanting sessions throughout the whole month at this temple. Dad and I joined in for a session. Then we bought a light to lit the way (点灯) for our ancestors. We went to the roof top garden to spin the Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheel, to ward off evil spirits and receive blessings.Since it is the Hungry Ghost month, I have to be home at night. When I'm working night shift, Dad would fetch me. There are quite a number of rules to follow, although some of them are superstitious beliefs, I obey so that my elderly grandparents don't worry for me. Overpriced food My Mom brought us for Pork Rib Soup lunch at Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha. We ordered two bowls of pork rib soup, a bowl of braised pork trotters, a bowl of lean pork slices (S$8), a plate of salted vegetables, a plate of beancurd skin, a bowl of fried dough sticks and 4 bowls of rice.As we were early, the soup wasn't flavourful yet. There's only the peppery taste. It was the worse soup I have tasted at Ya Hua.This meal for S$37.50! How they count? When we paid the bill, we were charged S$37.50! Mom was shocked. The prices has risen unreasonably. Just 3 weeks back, 4 of us had the same dishes for S$30 and we had ordered 4 bowls of pork rib soup.Ya Hua doesn't publish its prices on its menu and every time we eat there, we simply pay. Mom would ask for the price of each dish if she feels overcharged. The stall-owner always has excuses ready to justify the prices.Mom has decided we will not be going back no matter how good the food is. Jack Neo's 'Money No Enough 2' Gala Premier Director Jack Neo and the castI was very happy and excited to get 2 free tickets for Jack Neo's 'Money No Enough 2' Gala Premier. I have watched many of local director Jack Neo's movies. I was very excited to see him in person at his restaurant and tonight I'm meeting him again. My friends and IMom got 2 tickets too. Too bad Dad has to go for a grassroots meeting and cannot join us. I asked a friend to come along while Mom brought her young Taiwanese student. And OH MY GOD!! She was dressed in her ma jie costume after her photo shoot! *hides face* My friend and I just wanted to stay far away from her but she keep calling, "少爷! 少爷!" So paiseh sia.The Gala Premier was held at Vivo City. The whole cinema was closed for the private screening. We were early, we arrived before 7pm, the OMY team wasn't even there. So we waited until almost 7.30pm, then we got our tickets.I was interviewed on my way to the cinema hall. The interviewer wanted to speak to eastcoastlife but she was busy taking photos of the stars walking the red carpet. sighMy idol Felicia Chin and Mom's favourite Qi yu wuJack Neo and his team came to our cinema hall to say 'hello'. The movie started late, after 9pm. That was a long wait of more than 2 hours for us.brief appearance of Jack Neo and team before show startedI quite enjoy the movie. Most of it was in Hokkien. It is not as funny as other Jack Neo movies and it has some touching scenes.I can identify with the elderly mother who has dementia and was sickly in the movie. My elderly grandparents are like her. I saw from the corner of my eyes that Mom was crying. I think she also saw the same thing happening in her mother and my grandparents. This gala event is a great experience for me. It was only 8am when we reached Connaught Drive which was closed to traffic for this event. Dad had to park his car far away.Shiny vintage cars were parked or lined up for visitors to ogle. But we had to keep our itchy hands to ourselves. Cannot touch. heheRolls Royce!! Sentosa Island Mom's Taiwanese friend sent her son to Singapore to learn English during his school holiday. He's staying with us, I let him sleep on my bed. He's only 11. His English is limited. He learns English from 9.30 am to 5 pm every day. Mom brings him to school and sometimes Dad or I brings me home.Last Saturday I have no kitchen duty, so I brought him and another two students of my Mom to Sentosa. We took a bus to Vivo City, I bought tickets for every one with the money Mom gave me. There are special Day Passes for a child (S$21.90) and adult (S$33.90).It includes island admission, rides on the island buses, Luge and Skyride, entrances to Merlion, Images of Singapore and Fort Siloso. Wow. Value for money. :)We spent one whole day at Senosa Island. It was very tiring for me because the small boy is hyperactive and doesn't seem to get tired. The food and drinks sold on Sentosa Island is expensive. We couldn't eat much with the S$40 left, so we went over to Vivo City to eat. I was so tired when I got home that I took a bath and went to bed without having my dinner.Best Youth BlogPlease VOTE for Jaymes daily! You can win a travel package to Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh or Phuket. Side effects to injection I was at the hospital for a CT Scan of the pelvis this morning. After I changed into a hospital robe, a senior nurse briefed Mom and I before the procedure. I would be given an injection before scanning. She warned us of possible side effects.Mom was joking that I would not be able to become a Daddy after this. Lame.Mom was asked to wait outside. I lied on a scanning table, had to hold my breathe and keep very still when the scanning was on. The scanning table moved into a huge machine and I heard noises. It was painless. It was over in 10 minutes. While I was changing into my clothes, I discovered rashes on my body and swellings on my face. I informed Mom and she called for the nurse. The nurse gave me a huge cup of water and made me drink it, then she called for the doctor. I was immediately asked to go to the Recovery Room for observation. The doctor and nurses took my temperature and blood pressure and checked my body. I was given medicine and asked to rest in the room. When the rashes began to disappear, I was allowed to go home. This CT Scan cost more than S$77o. :PBest Youth BlogPlease VOTE for Jaymes daily! You can win a travel package to Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh or Phuket. There were 5 members in our team.I was picked to drive the first round to determine which position the team would take when the race starts. My kart almost flipped because I was pedalling too fast. The race was very exciting. Dad was the first racer and managed to overtake one team. Our second member was too slow and caused us to drop behind. We had to fill up a 2-litre water bottle and it was a mad rush.I was the last racer and had to go 2 1/2 laps round the circuit. We came in 4th. I was tired and suddenly I felt breathless and numbness in my limbs.Mom gave me a drink and when I complained of numbness, she decided to bring me home. With so many cooks in the kitchen, we are allocated different duties.I hate slicing, peeling and cutting. I cut a finger each on both of my hands. :( Such accidents often happen in the kitchen.
