Overcoming the deafening silence
The Enquirer
by Justin Zhuang
January 19th, 2009
For someone who is critical of the government for being deaf to its citizen’s opinions, especially in the past, the leader of Singapore’s largest opposition political party, The Workers’ Party (WP), is ironically half-deaf himself.
As Mr Low Thia Khiang puts on his hearing aids at the start of the interview, [...]
One month after escape – questions still unanswered
By Shaun Lee
February 27, 2008 – the day that the Number One suspected JI terrorist Mas Selamat Kastari escaped, it is said, while on a toilet break.
It has thus been one month – and the authorities are still looking for him.
While they do so, perhaps the rest of us should consider and ponder on the [...]
Manifesto II: WP’s housing agenda
In this second of a 5-part series on the Workers’ Party’s 2006 General Election Manifesto, The Hammersphere invokes the essential “roof-over-head” agenda of the WP.
This recall is timely in the aftermath of National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan’s comments in a Straits Times article last month (18 February 2008) that “HDB flats still remain very [...]

On a five-time-walkover minister in six elections
Several netizens have called on Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng to resign after Mas Selamat Kastari, an Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee suspected of being part of a terrorist movement escaped from the Whitley Road Detention Centre where he was placed under preventive detention.

(一)有一份稳定的工作,可以减轻家中的经济负担;
(二)享有低廉,高素质的医疗护理;
(三)社会与居住环境安全稳定,各个族群能和谐相处;
(四)每一个学生不管家境如何都能享有世界级水平的教育;

The Workers’ Party in 2007: A year of constructive engagement
By Andrew Loh
The Workers’ Party (WP) has been busy in 2007, despite what critics may say.
In Parliament, in HDB heartlands and within the party itself, much was done. A look at the activities of the party in 2007 proves this.
Chairman Sylvia Lim and Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang brought up a whole slew of issues in [...]
Black: Perfect colour of dissent
Citizens who wish to express their objections against any government policy may find the colour black a pertinent fitting.
The reason?
The People’s Action Party (PAP), which has been in government for a long time, dons all white.
Black is the reverse of white.
And black will be what a gathering of netizens will put on when they come [...]

To conquer a conqueror

The Hongkong-produced drama “The Conqueror’s Story”, which ended its run on local TV yesterday, is based on the Chu-Han contention in China from 206 to 202 BC.

Redevelopment: Erasing the bonds of community
Andrew Loh & Shaun Lee
In a fast-changing Singapore landscape, it is perhaps hard to find bonds of friendship, camaraderie and community among residents of HDB flats. The pace of “progress”, development and redevelopment affects more than the physical landscape.
It affects personal relationships as well – especially between elderly residents. The fragility of bonds built up [...]
