Comment on So sick of this government by SS Rach you hit the nail right on the head.. the govt doesnt look after its own. Instead it prefers to attract Foreign talent at the expense of the locals. They must have wet their pants recently when they saw that bankers were getting fired in the NY and LDN. Here, our own are getting fired (case of that 50yr old in DBS) and yet they were talking about getting these unemployed foreigners here. Of course they will come if they could get a job. Comment on So sick of this government by andrewong2024 Read the Straits Times less and you won’t get too sick =P Comment on My New Fashion and Style Site by charmaine hi, I am running a xmas charity auction on my site …I hope the readers would join in … thanks regards, charmaine Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Xtralicious LOL!!!! Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by MB OKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK… My avatar at wordpress has definitely changed. I don’t know why it hasn’t changed here! Sorry! Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by MB I actually changed my avatar at wordpress before I wrote the comment here and I was also kinda likw wth! Why hasn’t it changed yet?! And now, I’ve signed in to wordpress but apparently, I’m not logged on to write a comment here. Wordpress hates me! Comment on Old pictures - oh so nostalgic by fitti Germaine was such an adorable baby and looked so good in a skirt! =) Ya, I know what you mean about being nostalgic…I missed having Kai in my belly, kicking…and the time when he was still a small baby…..sighs…..now it’s my turn to feel nostalgic after looking at Ger’s pictures……… Comment on Old pictures - oh so nostalgic by Xtralicious hyperX: LOL about the ‘not so cute’! Comment on MM Lee and I have one thing in common by Xtralicious kat: Yes, America is truly a land of opportunities. And with Obama looking to head the country, I think we can see even more changes ahead. Comment on Gean’s K1 Concert by Xtralicious Gracey: Thanks! Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Xtralicious Cat: Sigh. Makes me so sick to hear these stories. The weird thing is how they would always sound so proud and superior when relating how they ‘put their maids in place’. I am like, don’t these people realize how stupid and ridiculous they look by giving themselves ‘airs’? PS - I think amahs in the past have more status and respect than the maids now. Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Xtralicious saga: Well, I don’t know and while I cannot speak for others, I think I have the duty and responsibility to myself in self control. If stress makes us behave like animals, then civilization has not come far. Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Xtralicious Gracey: Same here. We had maids when my gramps had her stroke and they all agreed to not have off days - we paid them off in lieu to be fair. We treated all our maids with kindness, although I would say that some are certainly undeserving. My point is, changing the maid instead of ill treating/ abusing is a better option for all. Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Xtralicious Chee Wai: Thanks for the video link - it is very interesting and illuminating. As for the addressing, I believe some mean it to be “mum” which I think is rather endearing. LOL Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Xtralicious MB: I prefer the term ‘helper’. And my kids call my part time helper Auntie instead of by her name like I hear some kids addressing their helpers. 没大没小。 And eh, your avatar is *ahem* very distracting! Comment on Old pictures - oh so nostalgic by hyperX Ya, kids grown up fast. So make sure those who have babies take as much picture as you can before the your kids “not so cute” lol. Comment on Gean’s K1 Concert by gracey Gean has a very sweet smile! Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Cat I did and I am no longer friends with these people. Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by MB To Cat did you actually do something and talk to your friends about the treatment of their housekeepers?! if not, i believe you’re practically on the same spectrum as them. please dont just be a bystander! Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Cat I have had friends who treat their maids like that & are proud of it. One told me he supervises his maid while she washes his car. This maid of his was a petite little thing, had a lug a pail of water to the car park, wash his car at noon - so that the car dries faster (he claims). He would stand in the shade & supervise her, making sure she doesn’t get sloppy. Another bragged that his maid eats what he thinks is good enough for her. She cannot order or buy her own meal when she goes out with the family. I wonder if his boss orders his lunch for him …. And another, allows her maid to eat with the family, but not at the same table. The maid sits on a stool next to the family dinner table & eats out of her plate. So that she can be nearby her Kids if they need help with the feeding. *roll eyes* My maternal grandmother was once a maid to a British family. Despite the class difference, she was never treated as badly as some of these maids. She was never made to feel small. Yes she knows her place but she was respected too. Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by saga is it becoz of the stress that is piling up in society that makes us wants to abuse people? Comment on MM Lee and I have one thing in common by kat Yes, the story of Dr. Carson’s success is inspirational. If not for his mother who in spite of her poverty and illiteracy pushes her children to succeed. There are many many such stories in America of people who succeed in spite of their economic status. I agree with you, so much for lky’s belief of eugenics. You forgot to add also that America is truly a land of opportunities. Obviously there are many flaws in America but there are also a lot of goodness in America. She allows its ordinary citizens to succeed at their own pace. In America if a person has the will, a desire to better him/herself & good work ethics, they will be successful in whatever they chose to do. Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by gracey I used to have a maid when my grandmother had a stroke..I don’t remember having such list for her. She shared the same table with us, eat whatever we eat, use whatever brands of shampoo/shower cream etc… She was really nice and we get along well. When we tell her that she don’t have to iron every single thing like bedsheets, home clothes, etc or clean those windows everyday, she almost broke down and cried thinking we are not satisfied with her work. I think the only thing she cannot do is she cannot go out unless necessary. As she needs to be around to take care of my bedridden grandmother. Comment on Golden Retriever for adoption by Lee Chee Wai Yay! I’ll remove the call from my facebook entry now :). Please send my apologies to Daryl for mixing him up with his dog (if you know him personally). Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by Lee Chee Wai I thought I would not be surprised by what Rachel would say about the list of rules after watching “The Maid Trade” (by Dateline - BBC I think) on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6kqvZx1Bzw Nonetheless, the sheer length of the list surprised me. I think it is demeaning to insist they address their female employers as “Ma’am”, using the same pronunciation granted to the Queen of England. Frankly, I feel exasperated yet helpless to do anything about the situation of maids in Singapore. It is short-term slavery in almost all aspects other than in name, actively demanded by Singaporeans, actively supported by the government (MOM). Comment on Maids - helpers or slaves? by MB omgggg.. the list is CRAZY! i honestly hate it when people call them maids, i feel like it is such a degatory term and honestly, when i read or watch the media abt stories where the housekeepers (is what i like to call them) are locked in at home etc. etc. it really scares me of how singaporeans have dehumanized them and in turn, themselves as well which leads me to say that i think most current societies are now socially and morally decaying. and besides, the children will learn how to treat others the way their parents treat their housekeepers. Comment on Golden Retriever for adoption by Lilian This dog has such a sweet face and I can’t imagine having to give him up! I have gotten my husband to place a link to your blog in the local arrowana forum as there are dog lovers there too. I hope he finds a good home soon!
