I usually avoid those diet drinks because somehow I believe that whatever is less (in a good sense) will have something more (in a bad sense) to compensate for it.

Oops…diet coke… I can’t live without it.. =( what am I supposed to do? I guess whatever you drink or eat, indulge it in moderation? Lots of people are telling me how bad diet coke can be..hmm..perhaps the healthiest drink is just plain drinking water?

i had this urge to comment. finally i am.
all i can say is “they need to pay the bills too” but the locals charged you too much for those 2 small fix. Perhaps they didn’t get the right message in the first place.

Thanks Jon. Your site is looking pretty neat. I like it.

Comment on Mandatory First Aid Lessons In Schools by ED
ECL, as far as I understand, only the PT teacher are trained in First Aid. That’s beside the CCA of St John’s or such.
Given that a school wouldn’t have too much PT teacher around, and considering we have to go through the PA system to call for him, valuable time is lost. I believe you feel the same.
Comment on Why I hate local freelancers? by ED
Jon, yep. I told them of only two specific I need to fix in the previous theme. But doesn’t matter now since I got it fixed with this new theme which I accidentally came across. Maybe God’s watching over me. Haha.
ECL, auntie oei… RMB. Hmmm Paypal accept RMB anot? Haha!

Don’t charge in USD! It will keep falling. Charge RMB! It’s going to shoot through the sky!

Long time no see!
My personal experience of our secondary school :
My son collapsed and black out for a short moment in school in 2005. He couldn’t breathe well not talk nor moved his limbs when he regained consciousness. Classmates carried him to the office. A staff tried to give him a drink.
My son later told me he felt like drowning because he couldn’t swallow and he was blinking his eyes furiously to make her stop.
The school called my house and hubby’s office number. I couldn’t be contacted and my hubby told them to send for an ambulance since my son was not able to move.
It took the school more than half an hour to call for an ambulance. Luckily my son was able to recover.
I wrote a letter to the principal and pointed out their inadequacies when faced with an emergency. The principal agreed on my points but didn’t do anything.
A few months later, my son had the same problem. Again, call for ambulance was delayed and the school insisted I go down and bring him home.
When they found my son’s condition deteriorating, then they sent for an ambulance.
I wrote to ST forum. A Director from MOE replied in the usual official reply and of course I didn’t expect them to do anything. And they really didn’t do anything…. up to today.
We have to save ourselves. If their own children and the children of the elites have no such medical problems, they don’t care a hoot about the common folks.
Moral of the story : Don’t depend on the government.

Endoh, I know where you’re coming from on why you’re pissed they charge high for a really simple tweak in the blog, now. hahaha!
Just curious, did you state clearly to the local FL your specific requirements?
Comment on Why I hate local freelancers? by ED
Wow.. that’s a classic mistake arising from overdose. I’ll get it fixed. LOL!

Kenna sai endoh wanna talk about me also spell my handle properly leh. LOL!
I am quite sure your post will upset some people and they will disagree quite violently. But maybe when the time comes when the PM tells you, it’s because your China colleague brings in business because they don’t charge as hard, then they’ll wake up.
And yes, I know that piece from Baby Lee is a load of bullshit. It’s as if we are a bunch of good for nothings asking for too much. But the point is this, web design is not a skill that’s rare or in high demand - same like your Tiger beer promoter…
Comment on Why I hate local freelancers? by ED
Jon, regarding skill level and experience that is what appalled me when the portfolio I am shown is what 90% of experienced designers can do. Afterall it’s only a blog and not anything complex like creating another MySingapore to rival MySpace. And clients like us wouldn’t know what is considered skilled, and what is not skilled. What is skillful in our eyes, may be frowned upon by other designers.

There’s no hard or fast rule on the pricing for each project. And to some extent, I do not agree to point 1 and 2. Why? Cos the pricing depends really on factors such as their cost, profit, market demand, skill level, experience, servicing and the client whom they’re looking at. With all that in mind, pricing are variable.
What boggles me is the USD currency instead of SGD.
I somewhat understood your frustrations as it is not easy to find freelancers who bagged good design skills with credible business sense.
Comment on Why I hate local freelancers? by ED
Yea I realized it dropped quite significantly too. USD$30 used to be above the SGD$45 mark but I think now it’s moving closer to SGD$40 range.
Comment on Why I hate local freelancers? by DK
Cool down dude.
I guess the reason why they are charging so high is because they might not get another project for the next few weeks. Thus they need to up their pricing to cover for those dry days.
BTW, with the USD exchange rate dropping, it makes no sense for them to charge in USD. I guess they just wanted to make it look cool that they are charging USD. Gives you the impression that they are doing international stuff.

Comment on Love & Jealousy by Jeslyn
Open conversation will only work if both parties are willing to admit that they are jealous or they are willing to talk to each other (some naively wanted the other half to guess).. on the other hand, if open conversation is not possible between the 2 persons, then there is no point being together anyway.
Comment on I have a serious problem! by ED
Walter, true! Maybe I should split up certain topics into 2 or 3 posts, beats squeezing everything into one I supposed.

I suppose it comes with practice. Writing sentences with far too few words can also seem rather abrupt. It may then appear like a machine gun speaking in short terse sentences. Or worse, sound like a message generated by a Morse code machine (or a 3 year old).
Another thing which I learnt in the school of writing (aka the school of hard knocks at work!) was that one should keep to one key point per paragraph. Anything more than that will make it less focused and precise.
