Camera comparison: Nokia's new N96, N85 and N79 versus Sony Ericsson K800i

image

This evening, I had a chance to play with the new Nokia N96, N85 and N79 phones up close and personal. I didn't get a chance to do as much as I wanted to at yesterday's media event for the Nseries phone launch, so this was a welcome treat. And since I use the camera feature quite often on my phone, I decided to put the camera-cum-photo feature to the test.

And it was a simple test: what sort of photograph would I get from each of the phones? Given that the new Nseries phones are top-notch, my hypothesis was that they would have the best visual output (excluding image size, since they're five-megapixel cameras, while my Sony Ericsson K800i's camera has three megapixels).

All photos were taken with the default camera settings under the same indoor conditions. I've re-sized them here to fit this blog entry.

First up, Sony Ericsson K800i.

Next: Nokia N85

Speech on "Parliamentary Elections": 27 August 2008

As most or all of you would know, Prof Thio Li-Ann and Dr Loo Choon Yong filed a motion to ask Parliament to call on the Government to amend the Parliamentary Elections Act, to provide for by-elections in certain circumstances. This was a Member's motion, not an adjournment motion. I will explain the difference in greater detail, as well as talk about what happened in Parliament today, in a later post.

But for now, the videos of my speech are below (courtesy of TOC), with the prepared text of my speech which I have updated to reflect the actual delivered speech as closely as possible (although I know I made some other changes on the fly which are not reflected here) below them. Also, the results of the TOC street poll can be found here.

Vote MP = Vote PAP? and the Presumption of Innocence

Uncategorized

Vote MP = Vote PAP?

As expected, there will be no by-election in Jurong GRC, even though it appears that residents themselves would rather have such an election. Nevertheless Mr Lee Hsien Loong’s reported speech is illuminating for the deliberate conflation of two separate issues; namely voting for your MP and voting for a political party.  Indeed this also highlights the role the GRC has to play in entrenching the ruling party’s hegemony.

Mr Lee claim is this,

unlike other democracies like Britain in which MPs form the government, Singapore’s system emphasises on choosing political parties.

So when an MP is elected, it means voters are also giving the mandate to the party represented by the MP to form the government.

That is an erroneous view. Undeniably there are instances where the person votes for the MP and votes for the party. There are however various oth[...]

Easy Access To Foreign Labour, Home Team And Immigration And Checkpoints Authority (Shortage of officers), Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill

EASY ACCESS TO FOREIGN LABOUR IN SERVICE INDUSTRIES

Ms Sylvia Lim asked the Acting Minister for Manpower whether easy access to foreign labour in service industries is counterproductive to encouraging employers to upgrade the skills of Singaporeans and undermines Government retraining efforts in service industries.

The Acting Minister for Manpower (Mr Gan Kim Yong): Sir, Singapore has limited local manpower. Foreign manpower has helped to augment our local workforce and enabled our economy to grow beyond our own indigenous workforce alone can support. Nevertheless, access to foreign labour is regulated. This is done through the dependency ratio as well as through the foreign worker levy. In services, for example, the dependency ratio is 50% with the foreign worker levy up to $450 for unskilled workers.

The presence of foreign workers does not ham[...]

Donating back to NUS: here’s how

Perspective

Two Saturdays ago, the Straits Times ran a story on alumni donations back to local universities and I was quoted in two paragraphs of the story talking about NUS. Today, I was finally asked by a colleague who read that story whether I really disliked NUS that much.

While the story might have given that impression, the truth is, I gave a very long interview and said alot more things which, taken together with the parts attributed to me in the story, will give a very different impression. I do not blame the journalist because I believe she had her own considerations in crafting her story and besides, there’s still the editor on top of her who can change her story.

Anyway, just to put things in perspective, I did say I threw away donation appeals from NUS but I also said the reason is because the name NUS does not have much affinity with me. NUS is a big institution with many [...]

Difference between Truths

stories
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: ‘I am blind, please help.’ There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, ‘Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?’

The man said, ‘I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.’

What he had written was: ‘Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.

Do you think the first sign and [...]

The Perception Personality Image Test

Your result for The Perception Personality Image Test…

NFPC - The Artist

Nature, Foreground, Big Picture, and Color

You perceive the world with particular attention to nature. You focus on what’s in front of you (the foreground) and how that fits into the larger picture. You are also particularly drawn towards the colors around you. Because of the value you place on nature, you tend to find comfort in more subdued settings and find energy in solitude. You like to deal directly with whatever comes your way without dealing with speculating possibilities or outcomes you can’t control. You are in tune with all that is around you and understand your life as part of a larger whole. You are a down-to-earth person who enjoys going with the flow.

It has been raining since Sunday. Bambi seems to be getting a natural wash, but yeah I’ll have to bring her for a proper wash soon enough, when the rain stops. I’ve not been to yoga since the last 5pm class on Saturday, not wanting to be stuck in the rain with Bambi is a bad [...]

StartupSchwag #11: Wearing my FriendFeed t-shirt

Fashion
image

Ripped open my StartupSchwag #11 yesterday, which contained an awesome FriendFeed t-shirt (it’s a keeper!), some stickers from Twiddla, Shoutlet, PeekYou, Answers.com, bookglutton.com, tips.net, as well as a pretty useless flyer for a fan-drive music site, OurStage.com (come on… get more creative!).

Last month, my StartupSchwag #10 included 1 of 50 pieces of Zivity t-shirts (uber-exclusive!), which I eventually bartered with MixieMoxie for a revealing theorycast interview.

‘24-hour Heat Resistant’ EZ-link Cards?

I refer to TODAY’s report ‘10000 to trial new ez-link card’ (27th August 2008). The initiative by the LTA to integrate non-cash transactions using contactless cards into one single card should be applauded. This is the way to go to facilitate convenience between public & private transportation.

LTA should take this opportunity to ensure that its vendor use ‘24-hour heat resistant’ materials during the manufacturing process of this new ez-link card.

The reason is because, the ‘blue butterfly’ series cash card series launched by Nets earlier this year had caused inconvenience to numerous motorists. For example, my recent purchase of a ‘blue butterfly’ series cash card in place of a faulty cash card of the same series, still resulted in two ERP summons this month despite having ensured that the newly topped up cash card is securely placed in my vehicle’s IU*.[...]
