YW President’s statement on Vote@18

8 May 2008 by WPYW

The Workers’ Party Youth Wing (WPYW) wishes to thank, once again, all participants who attended the inaugural YouthQuake forum on voting@18 on Saturday, 3rd May 2008.

A full house with many new and youthful faces is testament to the timeliness and impact of this matter but more so an editorial by Andy Ho of the Straits Times (8 May 2008) perhaps alluding to the WPYW forum (as a public forum - which is factually accurate).

We agree with the arguments raised in Mr. Ho’s editorial, since virtually all of these arguments were raised by the speakers at the above event and duly recorded by Mediacorp, and urge that this matter be debated in Parliament regardless of partisan standing.

We stand united for the betterment of the nation.

Watch this space for the next forum coming up on issues of national importance and their impact on Singaporean Youth!

A Kilo of Rice from Tua Pek Kong

While we were whipped into a wild frenzy over the Mas Selamat debacle, this little CNA report quietly slipped past most Singaporeans eyes. According to charities, the queue for free food is getting longer. While this queue grows longer, the Dept of Statistics uses a fairly odd adjective to describe the situation. Inflation was "boosted", it has an uncannily happy, almost positive ring.

Boosted.

----------------

Singapore's March inflation rate at 26-year high of 6.7% ( 23 Apr 2008 1331 hrs)

SINGAPORE: Singapore's annual inflation was 6.7 percent last month, the highest in 26 years, the Department of Statistics said on Wednesday. It said the consumer price index (CPI) was boosted by higher costs of food, transport, communications and housing.

The March CPI was down 0.1 percent from February's figure, the department added. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the index was 0.3 pe[...]

510 <3

The glass doors slid open quietly and I stepped through, relieved to be leaving the office building. It was almost 11pm, and I was bone-weary. My eyes hurt from staring at a computer screen for hours, my skin yearned for a good rub of moisturiser and my body demanded a shower just a few degrees short of scalding. I needed to go home.

The cab was waiting. I got in next to the driver, buckled up and let out a sigh - the soul-deep appreciation kind. The driver chuckled.

"Work so late..." he smiled, and I detected compassion and amusement in his tone.

"Yah lor. 14 hours leh, Uncle."

"Wah! And I thought I work long hours... ha! Ha!"

I smiled a small, polite small. I wasn't interested in conversation. I wasn't interested in pretending to be interested in someone else.

"Nowadaaay..." He paused; a painful punctuation to his wretched grammar. "..Singaporean all workaholic. Ha! H[...]

The 3rd LAS conference, (or "Does the Singapore Public Library have a National Marketing Strategy?") - Part 1

image

[Views expressed in this post are strictly my own and do not represent the official stand of my employer. This is also a long, rambling post. Consider yourself warned! :) ]

Today was Day One of the 3rd Library Association of Singapore (LAS) conference (8 - 9 May 2008).

I'd planned to blog its highlights from the keynote speech and papers.

But a chance encounter with a Question changed all that (as you will learn soon enough).

The way I answered the Question nagged at me; a mental itch that I have to scratch away.

I decided to blog about it as catharsis.

But instead, I ended up with an idea for next year's conference theme.

So...

The Question

During one particular Q&A segment, an overseas delegate asked the panel, "Is there a National Marketing Strategy for Singapore's public library services?"

I wasn't in the panel, you see.

I was standing way back in the room[...]

Them 10

Nevermind the gays, now it's those pesky teenagers who are spreading AIDS! Just look at the statistics!

(emphasis mine)

Teens, sex and Aids: Time to face up to today's realities

With teen hiv on the rise, is the abstinence-based approach relevant?

Tan Hui Leng

Amid the heady flush of first love, or lust, can two hot-blooded teenagers abstain from sex when even grown-ups yield to temptation?

More importantly, are we willing to live with the risk of giving them the benefit of the doubt when their lives and future could be at stake?

Risk, in this case, is spelt HIV. Just look at the statistics.

According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections have been on the rise annually, registering a record high of 422 diagnosed last year. Those in their 20s and 30s make up the biggest proportion of total patient load.

Does that mean they contracted[...]

Exclusive: Pre-Release Look at Comic Life Magiq!

Apple
image

I love Comic Life. That’s why I’m delighted to have a pre-release hands-on with the new “pro” version, Comic Life Magiq!

Brian Caldwell, Senior Director of Plasq.com, notes that Comic Life Magiq took 15 months of development and is released as a new Leopard only application. The reason? Comic Life Magiq is built from the ground up to leverage the power of Mac OS X 10.5 core technologies, like Core Image and Core Animation resulting in photo-comics with unique visual effects and elegant layout. See more screenshots after the jump…

Here you see the designer templates, sorta like themes in Apple iWork applications.

He also notes that “[t]he comic page layout engine can handle complex and creatively-curved comic panels, speech balloons and captions. Artistic ‘brushes’ provide hand-drawn feel to lines, and powerful compositing lets the user flexibly combine their imag[...]
